Get a copy of your credit report
Before approaching a mortgage broker, it’s important to get
a copy of your credit report so you can see what your current credit
score is. This will give you a better understanding on where you stand
in the loan market, as your credit score plays a big role in what kind
of interest rates you are able to get. If you have bad credit you will
either not be able to get a loan or pay a higher interest rate.
Insist on a fixed rate mortgage and if possible get a 15 year mortgage
instead of a 30 year mortgage. You will be able to own your home much
faster with a 15 year mortgage. Your monthly payment will be slightly
higher but you will save a ton of money that would otherwise be wasted
in interest payments.
Certain mortgage brokers will tell you that an adjustable rate loan is
the best way to go, but in the majority of cases this is simply not
true. Avoid adjustable rate mortgages.
Ultimately, the Utah County mortgage broker often gets paid more if you
go with an adjustable rate, which means it’s in their best interests to
give you this advice. It’s a much better idea to insist on a fixed rate
mortgage, so you know exactly where you stand.
